About TBM (The Builder Market):

The Builder Market is a service marketplace connecting homeowners and construction professionals. The platform offers homeowners access to a comprehensive directory of 1.5+ million professionals nationwide, providing the opportunity to find the right match for any project. Professionals benefit from our professional-friendly design, which includes accessible communication channels for seamless collaboration.

My role

I led the UX and interface design, and collaborated with the product manager and developers to bring the design to life.

Problem I solved:

I facilitated the integration of two platforms, Struktur and The Builder Market, by developing a streamlined information architecture. This was achieved through 10+ design projects, during which I conducted user interviews and competitive research to gain valuable insights and identify user needs, informing the new user flow.

To begin my work, my initial focus was on understanding our target users by discussing with the product manager and the team. We identified two main user categories to prioritize:

To get a better understanding of the needs of the home-owner side, I conducted interviews, with 6 professionals (Business side), separated participants into 2 groups:

1) professionals with sucessful online business experience;
2) professionals who did well offline but unsatisfy with online experience

and 3 Home owner users (Customer side), finally mapped out their pain points, goals, and motivations of the business users.

After conducting a competitive analysis and benchmark study, we identified opportunities to improve the user experience through the following UX design improvements:

Streamlined

  • Create seamless user journeys from start to end: professional searching, request quote, to project management and project closed.


Transparent:

  • Eliminate the need for users to go through multiple filters and answer various questions before accessing professional and project examples.

Collaboration

  • Foster connections between professionals to enable collaboration and joint projects

For TBM’s MVP launch, me and the PM collaborated together in designing the sprint during the summer, and for design works, we separated them into 3 sprints, each with its GOAL, PROBLEMS, and SOLUTIONS.

Based on the user research, our next step is to INTEGRATE the two platforms, and make sure the communication is TRANSPARENT, and encourage COLLABORATION during the project management process. After that, I create this new User Journey based on the 2 old platform’s service, with highlight on the TRANSPARENT AND COLLABORATIVE feature.

Reflection

As a UX designer, this experience has been valuable in honing my skills and abilities. As a newcomer to the workplace, this experience has helped me to quickly learn the ropes and understand the processes and dynamics of working with a team. By working on this online product, I was able to improve my ability to collaborate with product managers and front-end developers. I was able to assist the product manager in planning the information architecture of the product and helped to merge the different businesses of the two companies. Additionally, I was able to quickly understand the product and users in a new area, which helped me to design a user-friendly and efficient interface. Overall, this experience has been a great learning opportunity and helped me to grow as a designer.
